These fungi -- sold as a delicacy in the produce sections of local supermarkets -- thrive on the downed wood, turning it into sugars that they use for food. The mushrooms could also offer a new approach to the efficient production of biofuels like ethanol, according to the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), the U.S. Department of Agriculture's chief scientific research agency."
